Social Media
For the past decade I’ve gone through a variety of social media phases on the topics of photography, art, and extreme sports that have taught me many valuable lessons. However, it all boils down to one question:
How do you narrow your niche and widen your audience at the same time?
Here are some strategies I’ve used to answer that question in the world of FPV.
73,500 following in the first 6 months
Average monthly viewership of 2,000,000
Follower conversion rate of 7.3%
Exploration
At the core of my strategy to bring FPV to a wider audience is content that focuses on where drones can take you. Talking about gear constantly is extremely limiting, and if people are instead exposed to the exploration it enables, the engagement skyrockets.
Levels of Complexity
The most important go-to series on my account is “Flying the Same Spot, But Increasing the Difficulty.” This series was inspired by Wired magazine’s series “Expert’s Explain One Concept In 5 Levels of Complexity.” People outside of the hobby don’t want to watch a 5 minute freestyle pack. They need high stakes and fast paced intensity. With this series, I’ve made millions of people who don’t know about FPV suddenly on the edge of their seats for a Matty Flip.
Social Interaction
Another main tenant of expanding a niche to a wide audience is social interaction. A popular form of this content is accounts that speak to random members of the public about their niche, allowing the audience to learn vicariously through that person. Similarly, introducing flying to strangers in public is a captivating format.
